It’s a common misconception that if you live in an apartment you shouldn’t get a dog. This is entirely untrue, in fact, there are many breeds of dogs that are perfectly suited to apartment living.

We’ve made a list of some of the best breeds to consider if you’re living in an apartment and considering getting a pup.

French Bulldogs

Also known as “frenchies". They’re a smaller breed that have lower energy levels, making them suitable for smaller spaces. They typically don’t require too much exercise. While they still need daily walks and plenty of social interaction, they need a lot less than a lot of other breeds. They’re also known for being friendly, affectionate and great with kids.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Another smaller breed that doesn't require much exercise. They’re known for being gentle and loving dogs that become very attached to their owners. Given their small size and friendly nature they’re suited perfectly for apartment life.

Greyhound

This one takes most people by surprise given the size and perception of greyhounds being such fast dogs. Surprisingly, they still make the list as one of the best suited breeds for those living in an apartment given they’re so calm, gentle and again require less exercise than most other breeds.

Boston Terrier

Another small breed that is great for apartment living, the Boston Terrier. Being very intelligent dogs, they’re very easy to train which is helpful when living in a small space. They do have a moderate energy level, so still require a good amount of walking and time at the park, and as with most other breeds of dog will thrive on interaction with other dogs.

Pug

Pugs have a laid back nature and are very affectionate. They don't require much exercise making them a perfect apartment dog. These pups are very loyal and love affection from their owners.

Chihuahua

Chihuahua’s are the smallest of the above mentioned, making them an obvious option for those living in an apartment. Again falling into the low-energy category they require much less exercise than most dogs. As with the others, they’re known for their loyalty and affection towards their owners, making them a great option if you have small kids.

If you’re considering a dog and live in an apartment, the main things you typically want to consider are the dog's energy level and temperament. While size also plays a role, you have breeds such as greyhounds which are still considered one of the best apartment-friendly dogs, so this isn’t always the main consideration.

It’s important to do your own research and understand which breed might be best for you based on the space you have available, your lifestyle and family situation.
